Pelvic Pain and Dysfunction |
What is pelvic floor dysfunction? It is any impairment of the pelvic floor muscles that support the internal organs and aid in urination and defecation. The muscles spasm, causing pain, making them weak. A true cause is unknown but the dysfunction may be from a nerve damaged during childbirth; a fall involving the lower spine; recurrent urinary infections; or muscle stress caused by your posture or the way you walk.
Pelvic floor dysfunction can cause:
- Pelvic pain
- Urinary incontinence
- Low back pain
- Irritable bowel syndrome
Pelvic floor dysfunction is often overlooked as a diagnosis. Women may see many physicians before they are diagnosed. It can be a frustrating and emotional process. They may think, or be treated as if the pain "is in their head." We say, don't give up.
