What is minimally invasive surgery (MIS)?   « Back

June 18, 2007

MIS replaces surgeries that would otherwise require opening the abdomen. Our physicians are trained and highly skilled in minimally invasive surgeries which may include:
  • Hysterectomy (removal of the uterus)
  • Removal of large ovarian cysts
  • Treatment of stage 3 and 4 endometriosis
  • Large fibroid removal
  • Releasing adhesions that are a source of pain
  • Treatment of stress urinary incontinence
  • Pelvic floor reconstruction
  • Vaginal vault or uterine prolapse

How is it done?

The procedure uses a lighted telescope (laparoscope) inserted through a small incision in the abdomen to operate in the pelvic area. The surgery is performed with a tiny laser scalpel within a narrow tube. A video camera magnifies the view of the belly and records the operation. Blood loss is minimal and injury to other organs is rare.

Why is this better for you?
Minimally invasive surgery has the lowest published complication rate of all laparoscopies. The benefits are many:
  • Smaller incision
  • Minimal blood loss
  • Shorter operating and anesthesia time
  • Less scar tissue formation

And ...

Because this surgery is less invasive than traditional open surgery, you can expect:
  • Less pain
  • Quicker recovery time (1-2 weeks vs. 4-6 weeks)
  • Fewer post surgery restrictions
  • Shorter hospital stay (usually 24 hours)
